Putting a Face on Childhood Cancer

Did you know that:

  • Every five minutes, someone in this country is diagnosed with blood cancer. Every nine minutes, someone dies.
  • Leukemia is the leading cause of disease-related death among children under age 15.
  • Approximately 3,000 children die from a blood cancer every year.

We are asking you to join us in bettering our community and our world. As a human being, we are sure you recognize that our children are the future of our world. From the youngest to the oldest, each life has value, and a society can often be measured by its commitment to preserving and enriching each and every life. Can you walk two miles to help protect our future? Can you donate a few dollars? Can you send an

This fall along with 1000+ walkers in over 125 locations across the US and Canada, we will be walking as part of the Friends of Allie (FOA) National Team. We will be walking in memory of a baby girl named Allie Scott, who was born in Texas, and left a Texas-sized mark on the world. Allison Leigh Scott was born December 17, 2003, and diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in May of 2004. Sadly, Allie lost her battle to AML on September 13, 2004 -- 4 days shy of turning 9 months. She never walked. She never talked. She never had a birthday party. Yet Allie is still here. She is with thousands of us in spirit every day. She reminds us daily of the value of life. She reminds us to cherish our time with our children. She reminds us of the profound difference a single life can make in this world. She touched people’s hearts and inspired their passion to make a difference.

FOA is the largest national Friends and Family Team for the Light The Night Walks. Motivated by the plight of Allie and other children battling blood cancers like her, a grassroots movement emerged, resulting in the formation of FOA and its unprecedented fundraising efforts for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  FOA has enlarged its scope to include affiliate teams—both corporate and

Friends of Allie is raising funds for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, in hopes of claiming an even bigger prize at the end of 2006 —the chance to name a pediatric cancer research grant in honor of children battling blood cancers. The team must raise $100,000 to receive the Society’s grant-naming opportunity, but we do not plan to stop there. The national goal for this team of more than 1,000 walkers is $312,000, an amount that would bring its total for three Light The Night Walks seasons to more than $1 million—all raised in just over two years. The Society has selected Joseph Wiemels, Ph.D., University of California, San Francisco, as a grantee for his research in the area of childhood leukemia. For each $100,000 raised, the team will have Dr. Wiemels grant named in its honor for a year up to three years total. Dr. Wiemels grant is made under the Society’s Career Development Program (CDP), which funds talented researchers at different points in their developing careers.
